Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap Tube announcement returns after wife's plea

Margaret McCollum and Oswald Laurence
were married for 15 years
A 40-year-old "mind the gap" recording once
heard across the Tube is returning to one station -
so the widow of the actor behind it can hear his voice.
Oswald Laurence's voice was used on the northbound Northern Line
but was phased out until only Embankment used it.
Dr Margaret McCollum said she often uses the station
and was devastated when "he wasn't there" in November.
She was given a copy of the recording after
Transport for London heard she went to Embankment
after his death to hear his voice.
After the request Transport for London bosses
decided to restore the voiceover warning to Embankment station.
'Zest for life'
Dr McCollum, 65, a GP, met her theatre actor husband
 - a Rada graduate - in 1992 on a tour to Morocco,
after he had left acting and was working for
 a tour and cruise company.
Margaret McCollum used to wait at Embankment station
 to hear Oswald Laurence's voice
The pair, who lived in north London,
were together until his death in 2007.
"It was devastating to lose him.
He had a great zest for life".
Dr McCollum said she used to frequently travel
via Embankment and loved hearing her husband's voice,
 even when he was alive.
"Since he died I would sit and wait
for the next train until I heard his voice.
"On 1 November he wasn't there.
I was just stunned when Oswald wasn't there anymore.
"I inquired and I was told there was a new digital system
and they could not get his voice on it."
But after hearing what the voice meant to Dr McCollum
Transport for London arranged for a CD of the recording for her,

It was visitor’s day at the asylum.

All the inmates were standing in the courtyard
and singing Ave Maria, and singing it beautifully.
Oddly, each of them was holding a bright red apple
in one hand and tapping it rhythmi-cally with a pencil.

A visitor listened in wonderment to the performance
 and then approached the choir.

“I am a retired choir director,” he said.
“This is one of the best choirs I have ever heard.”

“Yes, I'm very proud of them,” said the conductor.

“You should take them on tour,” said the visitor,
 “What are they called?”

“Surely that's obvious,” replied the conductor
. “They are the Moron Tapanapple Choir!”

People were getting increasingly skeptical of organized religion
and the effect was plain for all to see,
 especially in Western Europe.
Only a few people regularly attended the churches,
 mosques, temples and synagogues.
With such poor attendance,
it was inevitable that many had to be closed down
and sold at rock bottom prices due to oversupply.
Rich and famous musicians were keen to buy
up such properties as tax shelters.
They could also use the halls for rehearsals,
performances and parties while waiting for the prices to recover.
A nosy reporter happened to investigate Mick Jagger’s purchases
and found out that he had bought several churches,
temples and synagogues but not a single mosque.
Strangely enough, neither did Keith Richards
and the rest of the band members.
The mystery was finally solved when the reporter
managed to corner Mick one day
and asked him why this was so.
 “It no secret” replied Mick
“Everybody knows a Rolling Stone gathers no mosques. ”

Finally....The truth revealed at last...

Some years ago President Clinton was hosting a state dinner
when, at the last minute, his regular cook fell ill,
and they had to get a replacement on short notice.

The fellow arrived and turned out to be
a very grubby-looking man named Jon.
The President voiced his concerns to his Chief of Staff
but was told that this was the best they
could do on such short notice.
 Just before the meal,
the President noticed the cook sticking his finger
in the soup to taste it and again complained to the Chief Of Staff,
but he was told that this man was supposed to be a very good chef.

The meal went okay,
but the President was sure that the soup tasted a bit funny.
 By the time dessert came,
he was starting to have stomach cramps and nausea.
It was getting worse and worse until finally
the President had to excuse himself from the dinner
to look for the bathroom.
Passing through the kitchen,
he caught sight of the cook, Jon, scratching his bum,
which made him feel even worse.

By now, the President was desperately ill
with violent cramps and was so disorientated
that he couldn't remember which door led to the bathroom.
He tried every door in the hallway and was on the verge
of passing out from the pain when he finally
found a door that opened.
As he unzipped his trousers and ran in,
he realized to his horror that he had stumbled
into Monica Lewinsky's office with his trousers around his knees.

The President fell to the floor in pain
and as he was just about to pass out,
Monica bent over him to listen for a heartbeat
and heard the President whisper in a barely audible voice,
"Sack my cook."

All the monks in a certain monastery sing the simple word “Morning!”
 from their windows each sunrise.
One day, after several “Morning!” greetings had been sung,
a greeting of “Evening!” rang out.
In the courtyard below, a startled Brother Timothy said,
“Did you hear that, Brother Edward?”
 “Hear what, Brother Timothy?”
 replied Brother Edward.
Brother Timothy sang in reply:
“Someone chanted evening…”

You can never underestimate the inventiveness
 of Saskatchewan Farm Boys:
at a high school in the small town of Wadena in Saskatchewan,
a group of farm boy students decided to play a prank.
They let three goats run loose inside the school during school hours.
 Before turning them loose,
they painted numbers on the sides of the goats: 1, 2 and 4.

School Administrators spent most of the day looking for No. 3.

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are...

And you thought there was nothing to do in Saskatchewan!

An overweight blonde woman went to see her doctor one day,
so that she could
get some advice about going on a diet.
"Okay," said the doctor,
"I recommend that you eat regularly for two days,
then skip a day.
 Repeat this for two weeks
and the next time that you see me
you should have lost t least 5 pounds."
Two weeks later the blonde see's her doctor again.
She gets on the scales
and the doctor is happy to see
that she has lost nearly 30 pounds.
"So you followed my instructions then?"
asked the doctor.
"Yes," the blonde nodded,
"but I can tell you I thought I was going to drop
dead on the third day!"
"From the hunger you mean?"
asked the doctor, confused.
"No," replied the blonde,
 "From skipping all day!"

Same Place, Same Time, Tomorrow. That was sad.

Some days you do need a hug. Those were all awesome.

Grandparents trying out new things. Bwahahahahahahaha. What a hoot.

That black cat coming out of that building that came down was a miracle. Probably scared it half to death too.

The dog and human and the cat and human...right on the money.

That lost and found dog was amazing and then some. Wow.

The sheep highway made me smile.

Love the Friends Are Waiting - Budweiser commercial. So cute.

Phun Phacts - I didn't know a one of these.

I'm no Facebook, but it's not my favorite place to be.

Mind the Gap. Wow. London did the right thing returning his voice to that station.

Idiot of the week. What a bunch of idiots. We see them all the time though. They are always scary too.

Loved the clock in London. That was cool.

What could possibly go wrong? Yikes.

Tool Glock. Way, way, way cool.

Canada sure gets made fun of a lot. Yes indeed.

I stole the joke about the goats. That was funny and then some.

I loved Kevin Spacey in House of Cards.

All those movie facts. Yikes I didn't know most of them.

The great ball contraptions. Pretty cool if you ask me. That had to cost some major money.

I posted the coffee and wine sign on Facebook.

I don't think the cats can read that sign.

The Maiers. Bwahahahahahahahaha. They are really good and way funny. Love the look on her face. So talented. Got to have the purse too.

The world facts were very interesting.

The fails. I watched a few, but just can't watch them. Makes everything hurt.

Loved the three wishes. Yes indeed.

Another fine week Phil.

Have a fabulous day. ☺
